Tashkent Authorities Move to Preserve Zharsky Brothers’ Mosaic

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Authorities in Tashkent's Mirzo-Ulugbek district have committed to preserving and restoring a Soviet-era mosaic panel created by the Zharsky brothers on Building No. 1 in the Turon mahalla, following widespread public concern regarding facade renovation plans.

The decision was made after reports circulated on social media indicating that contractors had attempted to paint over the artwork to incorporate the wall into a modern mural. The move sparked objections from local residents and heritage advocates, prompting a temporary suspension of all construction activities at the site.

The Mirzo-Ulugbek district khokimiyat subsequently announced that the artistic panel will be fully preserved and restored. Municipal officials emphasized that the restoration effort will follow an individualized approach tailored to the unique technical and artistic specifications of the mosaic.

Direct physical interventions on the artwork remain paused while specialist conservators assess the mosaic's structural condition. Following their expert evaluation, authorities plan to finalize a detailed restoration framework aimed at restoring the artwork to its original appearance.

The district administration also expressed gratitude to Tashkent residents for their active engagement in protecting the capital's architectural and cultural heritage.
