Mirziyoyev Backs Uzbekistan Team After World Cup Debut
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev expressed support for the national football team after its debut match at the World Cup, in which the team lost 1-3 to Colombia.
Speaking at the plenary session of the Foreign Investors Council, the head of state said the Uzbek footballers had shown strong character in the game against an experienced opponent. He stressed that the team's first goal at the World Cup was also significant.
"Our footballers showed strong character in a match against a very experienced team. For us, the first goal at the World Cup is also a victory," Shavkat Mirziyoyev said.
The president added that the players had shown dedication, willpower and determination to fight until the end, even in a difficult match.
Earlier, Uzbekistan head coach Fabio Cannavaro also praised the team's performance, saying he was proud of his players after the match against Colombia.
He said the match was historic and that participating in the World Cup is valuable experience for the players, despite the difficult conditions of the game.
