Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has strengthened local expertise in climate-smart agriculture in Uzbekistan’s Ferghana Valley through training-of-trainers (ToT) courses in Andijan, Ferghana and Namangan regions.

The courses were held in September and October under the project “South–South and Triangular Cooperation for Sustainable Agricultural Development in the Ferghana Valley” (UNUN/SEC/028/UND). A total of 38 participants completed the training and received certificates.

The courses aimed to strengthen the knowledge and skills of agricultural specialists and experienced farmers in sustainable soil and water management, growing climate-resilient crops and applying climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices. The training-of-trainers approach is intended to help participants pass on this knowledge to farmers, smallholders and other agricultural workers.

The training brought together specialists from the Andijan Institute of Agriculture and Agrotechnologies, Ferghana State University, the International Institute of Food Engineering and Technology, Namangan State Technical University, the Agency for Agro-Industry Development under the Ministry of Agriculture, and regional branches of the Republican Centre for Agricultural Services in Andijan, Namangan and Ferghana regions.

Experienced smallholders and farmers from the project’s target districts also took part.

The programme covered approaches to improving soil health, using water more efficiently and adapting agricultural production to changing climatic conditions.

Strengthening participants’ technical capacities in these areas is expected to support the wider adoption of sustainable practices on farms and smallholder holdings.

Implemented by the FAO Representation in Uzbekistan, the project aims to develop climate-resilient agricultural systems and improve rural livelihoods in the Ferghana Valley.

By strengthening the knowledge and technical capacities of smallholders, cooperatives and national experts, the initiative seeks to improve agriculture’s resilience to climate change, boost productivity and strengthen economic performance.
