Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan international defender Abdukodir Khusanov has signed a new five-year contract with English club Manchester City, the club's press service said. The new deal runs until the summer of 2031, extending his previous contract, which had been due to expire in 2029.

The 22-year-old joined Manchester City in January 2025. Over the past 18 months, he has established himself in the first team and regularly partnered Marc Guehi in central defence during the second half of last season. Khusanov featured in 16 of the club's final 19 Premier League matches and also played in the victorious FA Cup and EFL Cup finals.

The defender has made 47 appearances for the English club. Manchester City said his pace and defensive performances have made him one of the Premier League's standout young players. At the end of the 2025/26 season, Khusanov was shortlisted for the club's Player of the Season award, finishing behind academy graduate Nico O'Reilly.

The club also highlighted his contribution to Uzbekistan's national team, which qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in its history.

Commenting on his new contract, Khusanov said he was delighted to continue his career at Manchester City and was determined to earn a regular place in the team under head coach Enzo Maresca.

"I've enjoyed every minute since arriving in Manchester. I keep improving as a player here and learn something new every day.

"Now I have a new challenge — to impress Enzo Maresca and his coaching staff so I can play regularly. I'm fully determined to achieve that.

"Thank you to the City fans for your support. It has helped me settle in England and adapt to the Premier League.

"I'm only thinking about the future now. I'll do everything I can to help this club achieve as much success as possible," he said.

Director of Football Hugo Viana praised the Uzbek defender's potential, highlighting his physical and technical qualities and expressing confidence that Khusanov would become an important part of the team in the years ahead.

"We've been really pleased with Abdukodir's development since he arrived in England.

"We're seeing him grow into not only a brilliant young man but also an outstanding defender. We also know this is only the beginning. His physical and technical abilities are of the highest level, and he already possesses all the qualities needed to become a world-class defender.

"At just 22, his best years are still ahead of him. His enormous potential and ability to continue improving are clear for everyone to see.

"That's why we're delighted he has signed a new contract with Manchester City. We hope he will become an important part of Enzo Maresca's team in the years to come," Viana said.

Before joining Manchester City, Khusanov played for French club Lens and became the first footballer from Uzbekistan to play in the English Premier League.
