Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan will receive €103.7 million under the regional Climate-Resilient Landscapes in Central Asia (CLiCA) programme, which aims to restore ecosystems and strengthen adaptation to the impacts of climate change. The programme has a total budget of €264.4 million.
The programme was approved by the Board of the Green Climate Fund (GCF). It was developed by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) in cooperation with Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. In Uzbekistan, the work was coordinated by the National Centre for Climate Change under the National Committee for Ecology and Climate Change.
The funding allocated to Uzbekistan will be used to restore forests and pastures, introduce climate-resilient technologies in agriculture and expand farmers’ access to financial instruments for adapting to climate risks.
The programme is expected to strengthen climate resilience for 342,000 people in Uzbekistan, around half of them women. Climate-resilient management practices are also planned for 164,000 hectares of forests, pastures and agricultural land.
The programme is expected to reduce emissions and increase greenhouse gas absorption by a total of 1.07 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.
CLiCA aims to coordinate efforts among Central Asian countries to address shared climate and environmental challenges. Its priorities include conserving natural ecosystems, promoting sustainable land management and supporting local communities most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
GIZ said the programme’s approval marked an important step towards strengthening the resilience of communities and landscapes across the region.
The organisation plans to work with partners in Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to deliver long-term benefits for local populations and the environment.
Implementation of CLiCA is also expected to support Uzbekistan’s climate priorities, including restoring degraded land, using natural resources sustainably and developing climate-resilient agriculture.
