Uzbekistan Recognized for Green Agenda Contribution in Paris

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — An annual meeting of the GREEN Action Task Force 2026, organized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), was held in Paris.

A delegation of the National Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Climate Change, led by Deputy Minister of Ecology Zhusipbek Kazbekov, took part in the forum.

The event served as a platform to discuss key issues on the international environmental agenda, including the development of green finance, climate change adaptation, sustainable natural resource management, and strengthening regional cooperation in environmental protection.

Speaking at the meeting, Kazbekov presented Uzbekistan’s ongoing work on biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration.

It was noted that these areas are among the key priorities of the state environmental policy and are being implemented through budget financing, innovative financial mechanisms, long-term investment attraction, and within the framework of the international BIOFIN initiative aimed at reducing the financing gap for environmental protection measures.

Participants paid special attention to the transition toward a green economy. It was emphasized that Uzbekistan is consistently implementing large-scale reforms in this area.

In particular, the country plans to increase the share of renewable energy sources in total electricity production to 54 percent by 2030. Alongside this, comprehensive programs are being implemented to improve air quality, expand the network of protected natural areas, and develop circular economy principles.

During the discussions, participants reviewed prospects for the development of green and sustainable bond markets, the introduction of Green Taxonomy mechanisms, improvement of environmental regulatory systems, and increased transparency of investment flows. They also discussed preparations for the upcoming Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP17), as well as other international climate and environmental events.

Special attention was given to the implementation of international programs EU4ClimateResilience, EU4Green Recovery East, and PROGRESS, as well as projects based on the nexus between energy, water, and land resources. According to participants, these initiatives contribute to strengthening the resilience of regional economies and expanding nature-based solutions.

A key outcome of the meeting was the nomination of Uzbekistan’s Deputy Minister of Ecology Zhusipbek Kazbekov for the position of Co-Chair of the GREEN Action Task Force Bureau representing Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia for 2027–2028.

As noted during the event, this decision is the first of its kind in Uzbekistan’s history and is seen as recognition of the country’s active role in advancing the regional environmental and climate agenda, as well as confirmation of the effectiveness of its sustainable development and environmental protection policies.
