Uzbekistan and UNECE Enhance Partnership in Circular Economy

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Within the framework of a working visit, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and UN Under-Secretary-General, Tatiana Molcean, held a meeting with the Director of the Waste Management and Circular Economy Development Agency of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sharifbek Khasanov. During the negotiations, the parties put forward a number of joint initiatives and reviewed in detail current issues and prospects for bilateral interaction.

The primary focus of the dialogue was placed on strategic cooperation in the field of implementing circular economy principles and ensuring environmental safety. The parties discussed in detail the processes of accelerating the digitalization of the national environmental management system and waste disposal control. A separate item on the agenda was the strengthening of interstate cooperation in the environmental sphere across Central Asia.

During the meeting, international partners expressed support for the initiative to establish a specialized regional center for the Basel Convention, which is expected to provide an impetus to integration processes in the field of hazardous waste management.

The participants of the negotiations mutually confirmed the high importance of joint projects for modernizing the environmental sector of Uzbekistan and forming sustainable regional mechanisms for environmental protection.
