Uzbekistan and KfW Sign Agreements to Develop Water Supply and Sanitation Systems
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Within the framework of the fifth Tashkent International Investment Forum, the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the German Development Bank KfW signed credit and grant agreements on 16 June 2026, providing financing for major infrastructure projects in the field of water supply and wastewater management in the Surkhandarya and Fergana regions.
On the same day, joint-stock company Uzsuvtaminot and KfW concluded a project implementation agreement, establishing the mechanisms for their practical execution and confirming the readiness of both sides for the timely and effective fulfillment of the planned activities.
According to the reached agreements, credit funds in the amount of 130 million euros and grant financing in the volume of 67 million euros will be directed toward the implementation of the projects. The attracted resources will allow for the realization of strategically important initiatives to modernize municipal infrastructure, raise the quality of water supply and sewerage services, and improve the environmental situation in the regions.
The signing of the documents became another testament to the steady development of Uzbek-German cooperation in the field of construction and modernization of water supply and wastewater disposal systems.
In the Surkhandarya region, the project provides for the comprehensive development and modernization of sewage infrastructure in the city of Termez, as well as in the district centers of the Angor, Boysun, Kyzyryk, Muzrabat, and Altinsay districts. As a result of the project implementation, the quality of wastewater services will improve for more than 378,000 residents of the region, and about 150,000 people will gain access to a centralized sewage system for the first time.
In the Fergana region, large-scale work will be carried out in the cities of Kokand and Margilan. The project includes the construction and reconstruction of water supply and sewage facilities, which will significantly increase the quality of municipal services and provide the population with modern engineering infrastructure.
It is expected that over 600,000 people will receive improved drinking water supply, while the modernization of the sewerage system will create more comfortable living conditions for more than 590,000 residents. In addition, about 160,000 people will be connected to a centralized wastewater disposal system for the first time.
Within the framework of the projects, the construction of new water and sewage networks, reconstruction of existing facilities, and erection of pumping stations, wastewater treatment plants, and other necessary infrastructure are planned. The implementation of these measures will expand the population's access to modern and reliable utility services, as well as ensure a significant socio-economic effect.
The signing of the agreements marked an important milestone in the implementation of state policy aimed at modernizing municipal infrastructure, improving the quality of drinking water supply, and expanding the population's access to modern wastewater disposal services.
