Tashkent launches unified city parking system pilot
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Tashkent has launched a pilot project integrating parking spaces into a unified city management system aimed at improving urban mobility and road safety, according to the city traffic authority.
The Center for Traffic Management reported that one of the main challenges in the capital remains chaotic parking near high-traffic destinations. Vehicles are frequently left on sidewalks, driveways and building entrances, reducing pedestrian access, limiting visibility and increasing safety risks.
The project’s primary objective is to create a safer and more organized urban environment through systematic regulation of parking spaces.
As part of the initiative, private surface parking areas located near commercial and service facilities will be connected to a unified digital management platform. This system is expected to enable real-time monitoring of parking occupancy, accounting of available spaces and the introduction of transparent usage rules.
Officials stressed that the project is currently being implemented in a test mode. Its potential expansion will depend on performance evaluation and public feedback. A portion of revenues generated under the system is expected to be directed back to local districts for the development of road infrastructure.
According to the center, in high-traffic zones, 20–30% of vehicles are parked in violation of regulations. In some districts, sidewalks are partially occupied by cars, reducing pedestrian capacity by an estimated 40–60%.
In addition, up to 30% of traffic flow in congested areas, and in some cases up to 40%, is generated by vehicles searching for available parking spaces.
