Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The share of mahallas in Uzbekistan served by public transport rose from 87.9% to 98.8% between 2020 and 2026, while daily passenger numbers increased from 1.2 million to 2.6 million, the Ministry of Transport reported.
During this period, 1,037 new routes were launched across the country. Public transport now serves 9,331 mahallas, while the number of mahallas without route coverage has fallen from 1,118 to 111.
The share of the economically active population using public transport has also increased. The figure rose from 21% in 2022 to 37% in 2026.
To renew the vehicle fleet, 3,500 buses, including 753 electric buses, were purchased and put into service between 2023 and 2026.
Changes have also been made to traffic organisation.
On routes operating under a gross contract system, bus intervals have been reduced from 18–20 minutes to 10–12 minutes.
Average travel time to a destination has fallen from 45 minutes to 30 minutes.
Infrastructure development is continuing in 2026, with an additional 87 km of dedicated bus lanes brought into operation.
The authorities have also outlined plans to further expand the bus fleet.
By 2030, Uzbekistan aims to increase the number of new buses to 5,000 and the number of electric buses to 2,000.
