Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Construction of a 1.5 GW wind power plant and its connection to Uzbekistan’s unified power grid are entering an active phase in Karakalpakstan’s Kungrad district. The project, valued at US$2.6 billion, is being implemented jointly with Saudi company ACWA.
The project involves developing new renewable energy generation capacity. The development of wind power in the region is supported by Karakalpakstan’s large desert areas and high wind potential.
As part of the project, more than 1,400 km of high-voltage transmission lines will be laid, three 500 kV substations will be built and two more will be modernized.
Project General Director Bekhzod Zaripov said the construction of the 1.5 GW wind power plant is accompanied by the development of the required grid infrastructure.
The project is also expected to create about 1,000 new jobs, all of which are intended for local residents.
In addition, under the localization programme, around US$750 million is expected to be allocated for the production of goods and provision of services by local enterprises. The project is designed to strengthen links between the energy and industrial sectors, investment and employment, while introducing new technologies and expanding local production.
The project is expected to increase Karakalpakstan’s power generation capacity, support regional infrastructure development, attract investment and create new jobs.
