Uzbekistan and Serbia Agree to Strengthen Parliamentary Cooperation

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A meeting was held in the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan with a delegation from the Republic of Serbia led by Alexander Marković, Chair of the Committee of the National Assembly of Serbia on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality and head of the inter-parliamentary friendship group with Uzbekistan.

During the talks, the sides noted that relations between Uzbekistan and Serbia have gained new substantive content in recent years and, thanks to the political will of the leaders of the two countries, have reached the level of a strategic partnership.

It was emphasized that agreements reached at the highest level create a basis for expanding cooperation in trade, economic, investment, industrial, educational, cultural, and humanitarian spheres.

Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber Rahimjon Khakimov briefed the Serbian delegation on large-scale democratic reforms being implemented in Uzbekistan, including the development of human rights institutions, gender equality, youth policy, and social protection. It was noted that the 2023 constitutional reform expanded the powers of parliament and strengthened parliamentary oversight mechanisms.

The Serbian side expressed gratitude for the warm reception and positively assessed the ongoing reforms, as well as Uzbekistan’s growing international standing.

The sides discussed further deepening inter-parliamentary cooperation, expanding contacts between friendship groups and relevant committees, and developing cooperation in legislative work, parliamentary oversight, and the digitalization of legislative processes.

Special attention was given to issues of human rights, gender equality, support for the institution of the family, and youth policy, as well as the development of cooperation between women parliamentarians and young deputies.

Following the talks, the sides reached an agreement to expand mutual visits and further strengthen parliamentary diplomacy between the two countries.
