Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Two theaters from Tashkent will participate in the Second International Perm Phantasmagoria Theatre Festival, which will be held in Perm from 1 to 7 October.
The festival will feature 17 theaters from six countries, with a total of 22 performances presented to audiences, according to the organizers of the Perm Phantasmagoria festival.
Uzbekistan will be represented by the State Youth Theatre of Uzbekistan and the State Academic Russian Drama Theatre of Uzbekistan.
The State Youth Theatre will present the documentary drama “The Oath,” based on a work by Bakhrom Irzaev. The adaptation and production were carried out by Alexander Gamirov. The performance is based on real events and tells the story of young people from Turkestan who traveled to Germany to study in 1922, having promised to return and serve their country.
The State Academic Russian Drama Theatre of Uzbekistan will present the tragicomedy “The Choice,” based on Slawomir Mrozek’s play “Karol.” The production is directed by Honored Artist of the Republic of Uzbekistan Irina Avdyushkina. The play centers on a Grandfather and Grandson who visit an eye doctor and try to find a certain Karol, whom they perceive as an enemy. The production addresses themes of fear, prejudice and the search for those who differ from others.
The festival program includes theaters from Iran, Japan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Russia. Russia’s program will feature theater companies from Moscow, Tyumen, Chelyabinsk, Surgut, Naberezhnye Chelny, Kazan, Izhevsk, Perm, Salavat and other cities.
International participants include theaters from Kazakhstan, Iran, Japan, Belarus and Uzbekistan. Kazakhstan, in particular, will present the play “Lyuty,” which received the Grand Prix at the Kolonsak festival and the Golden Eagle award. Moscow will be represented by the School of Dramatic Art Theatre, founded by Anatoly Vasiliev.
The festival’s official opening ceremony will take place on 1 October at 19:00. The U Mosta Theatre will present Grigory Gorin’s play “Tevye the Milkman (Memorial Prayer).”
Performances will take place at two venues — the U Mosta Theatre and the Perm Puppet Theatre. Performances will be staged in Russian, while productions in foreign languages will be presented with subtitles.
Festival awards will be presented in nine categories, including the Grand Prix for Best Drama, Best Director, female and male roles, set design, acting ensemble and musical design. Special awards and jury prizes will also be presented.
The first Perm Phantasmagoria festival was held in 2024. It brought together theaters from Serbia, Japan, Iran, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia, which presented 20 performances. The Grand Prix was awarded to “Sholpan’s Sin” by the I. Omarov Kostanay Regional Kazakh Drama Theatre.
The festival is held with the support of the Ministry of Culture of Perm Krai and the Department of Culture and Youth Policy of the Perm city administration.
