Tashkent Police Officer Detained on Corruption Charges
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A senior officer from a criminal investigation unit in Tashkent has been detained on suspicion of corruption, according to the State Security Service.
The arrest was carried out during an оперативное мероприятие conducted by officers of the State Security Service, the Internal Security Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the city prosecutor’s office.
The suspect, head of a unit within the criminal investigation department of the Shaikhantahur district internal affairs office, is accused of accepting money in exchange for facilitating a favourable outcome in a fraud-related criminal case.
According to the State Security Service, the officer promised a businessman that he could influence the case through contacts within official bodies and demanded US$7,000 for his services.
He is also alleged to have requested an additional US$500 to help close a separate criminal case related to a restaurant fire in which an employee was injured.
During the operation, the suspect was detained while receiving US$2,500 as an advance payment.
A criminal case has been opened, and investigative procedures are ongoing.
