Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan plans to introduce a 5-km dedicated bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor in Nukus by the end of 2027 as part of a broader strategy to modernise local passenger transport through 2030.

The project is included in a draft presidential resolution outlining the country's local passenger transport development strategy.

The BRT corridor is planned along high-traffic sections of E. Alakuz Street, extending from its intersection with Karakalpakstan Street to the junction with Chimbay Highway.

Implementation will require the preparation of a transport model, technical solutions and design and cost-estimate documentation.

Funding is expected to come from grants provided by international financial institutions.

The Council of Ministers of the Republic of Karakalpakstan and Uzbekistan's Ministry of Transport have been designated as the responsible authorities.

The draft strategy also предусматривает the establishment of six transport hubs integrating railway stations, airports and bus terminals.

The facilities are planned for Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, Urgench, Nukus and Ferghana.

According to the implementation schedule, one hub is expected to become operational in 2027, three in 2028 and four in 2029. All six facilities are scheduled for completion by 2030.

Construction is expected to be financed through contributions from businesses and the state budget.

Another major objective is to increase the share of electric buses in public transport fleets across Tashkent, Nukus and regional administrative centres from 15% in 2025 to 30% by 2030.

The strategy sets interim targets of 16% in 2026, 20% in 2027, 22% in 2028 and 25% in 2029.

To achieve these targets, authorities plan to assess demand for electric buses and charging infrastructure and approve a location-specific procurement plan.

The document also notes that master plans for transport and road infrastructure development have already been prepared for Nukus, Tashkent and all regional administrative centres.

Expected outcomes of the strategy include expanding the network of transport corridors with dedicated BRT lanes and introducing intelligent transport systems.
