Kazakhstan ratifies transboundary water management agreement with Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, has signed the law ratifying an agreement between the governments of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan on the joint management and rational use of transboundary water bodies.

The agreement, originally signed on 15 November 2025, is aimed at advancing the joint management of transboundary water objects, encouraging their rational utilization, and ensuring the safe operation of water management facilities of interstate importance.

In accordance with the provisions of the agreement, a new Intergovernmental Commission will be established. This body will be tasked with coordinating issues related to the joint management of transboundary water bodies and regulating the operation of shared interstate water structures.

The ratification of the agreement is expected to strengthen long-term cooperation between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan in the sphere of water resource management, while serving as an institutional mechanism to prevent potential conflicts regarding the allocation of transboundary waters.
