Uzbekistan Intensifies Anti-Drug Campaign: Nearly 3 Tons of Illicit Substances Destroyed
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — A large-scale international conference was held in Tashkent, timed to coincide with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The high-profile event was attended by the leadership and members of the State and territorial commissions on drug control, key representatives of relevant ministries and agencies of the Republic of Uzbekistan, members of the diplomatic corps accredited in the country, as well as experts from international organizations and journalists.
The central event of the official program was a live demonstration of the uncompromising results achieved by domestic law enforcement and security structures. Via a live online broadcast, conference participants witnessed the complete destruction by incineration of a massive batch of illicit narcotics, psychotropic and potent substances, as well as chemical precursors. In total, 2 tons 963 kilograms 610 grams of banned substances—previously used as material evidence in concluded criminal cases—were successfully removed from illegal circulation and liquidated.
As part of the conference agenda, foreign diplomats and guests were presented with the official United Nations World Drug Report, highlighting key global trends, challenges, and emerging threats within the international drug trade.
An important segment of the program included an official awards ceremony where a large group of law enforcement officers and medical professionals were presented with government and departmental honors. The awards recognized their high professionalism, dedication, and courage in combating drug addiction and transnational organized drug crime.
In parallel, a comprehensive thematic exhibition was organized on the sidelines of the forum. The Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Customs Committee, the Border Troops of the State Security Service, the Ministry of Health, defense and youth agencies, as well as representatives from the school and higher education sectors showcased expositions illustrating modern methods used in drug enforcement, interdiction, and addiction prevention. The international forum concluded with a cultural concert program featuring performances by renowned local artists.
