Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The Road Safety Service has explained the need for drivers of mopeds, scooters and small-engine motor vehicles to hold driving licences, citing statistics on accidents and traffic violations.

According to the agency, 563 road accidents involving mopeds and scooters were registered during the specified period in 2026. As a result, 488 people were injured and another 89 were killed.

The Service also reported a sharp increase in the number of traffic violations identified among moped and scooter drivers. While around 300 such violations were recorded throughout 2025, the number reached 4,312 during the period that has passed in 2026.

In addition, in 162 cases, moped and scooter drivers were found to have simultaneously operated vehicles without the required documents and while under the influence of alcohol.

The Road Safety Service stressed that these figures demonstrate the need to strengthen safety requirements for the operation of mopeds, scooters and small-engine motor vehicles.

The agency noted that the requirement for state registration plates and driving licences for drivers of such vehicles is not new. The relevant requirements were first established by Government Resolution No. 131 in 2007.

The Service said that operating mopeds and scooters while intoxicated, as well as serious violations of traffic rules, poses a threat not only to the drivers themselves but also to other road users.

At the same time, the statement presented the statistics on 563 road accidents inconsistently, identifying them in one part as a figure for the first eight months of 2026 and later as a figure for nine months.
