Uzbekistan and Rosatom Expand Cooperation in Nuclear Medicine

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Another step in developing cooperation between Uzbekistan and Russia in the field of peaceful atom was made on the sidelines of the IV International Youth Nuclear Forum "Obninsk NEW." The Rosatom Technical Academy and the Atomic Energy Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan ("Uzatom") signed a cooperation agreement in the field of nuclear medicine and related fields.

The document was signed by Yuri Seleznev, Rector of the Rosatom Technical Academy, and Azim Ahmedkhadjayev, Director of the "Uzatom" Agency.

The agreement provides for joint work on developing the national nuclear medicine infrastructure in Uzbekistan, training and upgrading the qualifications of specialists, as well as exchanging scientific and technical knowledge and advanced practices.

Special attention will be paid to areas such as the production of medical isotopes, radionuclide diagnostics and therapy, theranostics, radiation therapy, the development of radiopharmaceuticals, and ensuring radiation safety.

Experts note that the development of nuclear medicine is becoming one of the most promising areas for applying nuclear technologies in healthcare. The use of modern radiopharmaceuticals and diagnostic methods allows for the detection of oncological and other diseases at early stages, as well as significantly increasing treatment efficiency.

The signing of the agreement reflects Uzbekistan's growing interest in implementing high-tech medical solutions and forming its own industry infrastructure. The most critical component of this process is the training of personnel capable of working with modern equipment and world-class technologies.

According to Yuri Seleznev, Rector of the Rosatom Technical Academy, the educational potential of the Russian side can become an important factor in developing the industry in the republic.

"The Rosatom Technical Academy possesses unique competencies in the field of nuclear technologies and their application in non-energy sectors. We see significant potential for the development of nuclear medicine in Uzbekistan and are ready to provide our educational, scientific, and methodological resources to train highly qualified specialists capable of working with the most modern technologies that meet world standards," he noted.

The development of human resource capacity is viewed as one of the key conditions for the successful establishment of the industry. The training of specialists will cover a wide range of professions—from doctors and medical physicists to radiochemists, radiopharmacists, and engineering and technical personnel.

As emphasized by Azim Ahmedkhadjayev, Director of the "Uzatom" Agency, cooperation with Rosatom has already reached a strategic level.

"The development of nuclear medicine is one of the priority vectors for developing the healthcare system of the Republic of Uzbekistan. In February 2026, together with the Rosatom State Corporation, work was initiated to create the Strategy for the Development of Nuclear Medicine of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Currently, the development of this document is being finalized, providing for human resource development, improving the regulatory framework, introducing modern technologies, and strengthening the national infrastructure of the industry," he stated.

According to him, the new agreement will allow a transition from strategic planning to the practical implementation of the outlined measures and the creation of a comprehensive system for training personnel for the industry.

The signing of the document became another testament to the expanding cooperation between Uzbekistan and Rosatom in the peaceful use of atomic energy. In addition to energy projects, the parties are consistently developing interaction in healthcare, education, and the scientific and technical spheres.

It is expected that the implementation of joint programs will accelerate the introduction of modern nuclear medicine technologies in Uzbekistan, increase the availability of high-tech diagnostics and treatment for the population, and create a solid foundation for forming a national system for training international-level specialists.
