Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The United States has suspended scheduling immigrant visa interview appointments for applicants worldwide amid tighter immigration policies under President Donald Trump's administration, Reuters reported. The US State Department attributed the decision to the launch of a global training program for employees at American embassies and consulates.

A State Department spokesperson stated that visa service schedules will be adjusted to accommodate the training. The agency did not specify the timeline or duration of the program.

According to the State Department, the training aims to assist consular officers in identifying applicants who might become dependent on US public social benefits, while ensuring a comprehensive and consistent evaluation of candidates.

The Financial Times previously reported the suspension. According to its data, immigrant visa applicants with existing interview appointments received notices that their meetings were being rescheduled, with new dates to be communicated later.

The suspension marks another step in the Trump administration's broader effort to tighten immigration policy. The campaign includes increased deportations, the revocation of visas and green cards, and stricter vetting of visa applicants.

Certain measures implemented by the US administration have encountered legal obstacles. On 21 August 2026, Federal Judge Jeannette Vargas struck down a policy that suspended immigrant visa issuances for citizens of 75 countries, ruling that the decision exceeded the statutory authority of Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

In addition to restrictions on immigrant visas, the US administration is tightening conditions for legal migration, including the introduction of new and higher fees for certain categories of work visas.
