Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The United States opened its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a convincing 4-1 victory over Paraguay in a Group D match played in Los Angeles, California. The game produced several statistical firsts of the tournament.

The scoring began in the seventh minute following an unfortunate own goal by Paraguay midfielder Damian Bobadilla, the first own goal of the 2026 World Cup.

The hosts then took control of the match. U.S. forward Folarin Balogun scored in the 31st minute and again in first-half stoppage time (45+5), recording the tournament’s first brace.

Paraguay reduced the deficit in the 73rd minute through Mauricio, but Giovanni Reyna sealed the emphatic victory for the Americans with a goal deep into stoppage time (90+8).

Group D also includes Türkiye and Australia, who are scheduled to meet on 14 June.

In the second round of group-stage matches, the United States will face Australia on 19 June, while Paraguay will take on Türkiye a day later.
