Great Wall Motor Company Limited is a globally known maker of SUVs and pickups; the company's name is a nod to the Great Wall of China, a symbol of strength and durability. Its story starts in 1976, initially repairing agricultural machinery; in 1984 the company built its first military off-roaders. From the early 1990s, GWM focused on SUVs and pickups, went international in the 2000s, and began aggressive overseas expansion from 2010.
Today Great Wall Motor owns HAVAL (SUVs and crossovers), TANK (premium off-roaders), ORA (EVs), and WEY (hybrid crossovers and EVs). The company runs more than 10 global R&D centers across China, Germany, India, Japan, the US, Austria, and South Korea, developing the L.E.M.O.N. platform used by both conventional and hybrid models, plus ADAS systems and autonomous-driving partnerships. GWM does business in more than 60 countries across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Oceania.
Interesting fact
The same company builds the rugged Tank SUVs and, in parallel, through a JV with BMW, the electric Mini for the European market.
