SAIC Motor was founded in 1955 in Shanghai — not as anyone's startup, but as part of a state industrial plan from day one. Today it's one of the world's largest automakers, building more than 5 million vehicles a year.
SAIC's brand portfolio reads like a tour through several eras of global auto history packed into a single conglomerate: the British heritage of MG and Roewe (whose name is simply Chinese phonetics for "Rover"), the industrial legacy of Maxus (grown from Britain's LDV, acquired in 2010), the premium ambitions of IM Motors, the budget-friendly Wuling and Baojun, and Rising Auto — a brand that went independent and then folded back into Roewe.
Interesting fact
The century-old British MG badge, under SAIC’s management, has become China’s best-selling passenger-car brand abroad.
