Gukesh-Sindarov World Championship Match Set for Geneva

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The FIDE 2026 World Championship match between defending champion Gukesh D. of India and challenger Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan will be held in Geneva from 25 November to 15 December. Both players will be 20 years old when the match begins, making it the youngest World Championship match in history.

FIDE interim President Viswanathan Anand said the organisation had received bids to host the match from several countries, including India, the United States and Cyprus. After reviewing the bids, FIDE selected Geneva as a neutral venue.

According to Anand, holding the match in Switzerland will allow local chess fans to watch leading grandmasters compete, while fans around the world will be able to follow the contest online.

Swiss Chess Federation President Andre Vogtlin described the selection of Geneva as an important event for chess in Switzerland. He said a competition of this scale would provide an opportunity to raise the popularity of chess in the country and attract new players to the sport.

Gukesh will defend the title he won in December 2024 in Singapore. At the age of 18, the Indian defeated Chinese chess player Ding Liren in the 14th game of their match to become the 18th world champion and the youngest holder of the title in history.

Sindarov earned the right to compete for the world chess crown after winning the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 in Cyprus. The Uzbek grandmaster secured first place with one round remaining. The victory marked another major achievement for Sindarov following his success at the FIDE World Cup 2025.

The match in Geneva will pit two representatives of the new generation of chess against each other. The championship match will consist of 14 classical games. The winner will be the first player to reach 7.5 points. If the score is tied after 14 games, the world champion will be decided by a tiebreak.
