Egypt edges Australia on penalties to reach World Cup last 16
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The Egypt national football team advanced to the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup after defeating Australia in a penalty shootout. The Round of 32 match, held in Dallas, ended in a 4-2 shootout victory for the Egyptians following a 1-1 draw at the end of regular and extra time.
Egypt midfielder Emam Ashour opened the scoring in the 13th minute. In the second half, the Australians leveled the score courtesy of an own goal by Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany, who sent the ball into his own net in the 55th minute.
The winner of the match was determined in a penalty shootout, where Egypt successfully converted four spot-kicks against two from their opponents.
During the group stage, Egypt finished second in Group G, while Australia finished as runners-up in Group D.
In the Round of 16, Egypt will face the winner of the match between Argentina and Cape Verde. That match will take place on the night of 4 July Moscow time, while the upcoming fixture involving the Egyptian team is scheduled for 7 July 2026 in Atlanta.
The FIFA World Cup is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and will conclude on 19 July 2026. Argentina enters the tournament as the reigning world champion.
