EBRD to Provide US$15 Million Loan to Meros Pharm
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will provide a loan of up to US$15 million (13 million euros) to Meros Pharm, the second-largest wholesale pharmaceutical company in Uzbekistan.
The allocated financial resources will be directed toward financing a large-scale development program for the enterprise, which has been a regular client of the international financial institution since 2023.
Using the EBRD loan funds, Meros Pharm plans to construct two new modern warehouse complexes in Bukhara and Nukus, as well as significantly expand the area and capacity of its current central distribution warehouse in Tashkent. The implementation of these infrastructure projects will allow the company to optimize its internal logistics system across the entire territory of the republic and significantly improve the access of broad segments of the population to high-quality pharmaceutical products.
In addition, the attracted funds will be partially directed toward replenishing the distributor's working capital, including the direct purchase of medicines from European suppliers. Thanks to this project, Meros Pharm will become the first pharmaceutical logistics company in Uzbekistan to introduce an ecological "green" certification system for its warehouse premises.
Additional support for the investment project will be provided by the Japan-EBRD Cooperation Fund, which will offer technical assistance. These resources will enable the company to integrate advanced energy efficiency measures at its facilities and develop a comprehensive five-year corporate strategy.
It is worth noting that to date, the total volume of EBRD investments in Uzbekistan has exceeded US$6.9 billion (6 billion euros) within the framework of implementing 210 projects, with the bulk of the capital directed toward stimulating private entrepreneurship. Over the past six years, the republic has consistently maintained its status as the largest recipient of EBRD financing among all countries in Central Asia.
