Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan’s Thermal Power Plants joint-stock company is continuing to introduce renewable energy sources and energy-saving technologies across its operations.
From January to September 2026, the use of solar energy and additional energy-efficiency measures helped generate and save a combined total of around 28 million kWh of electricity and reduce natural gas consumption by 7 million cubic metres.
A key area of work has been the expansion of solar power. Photovoltaic plants with a combined capacity of 15.9 MW have been commissioned across the company’s facilities, meeting part of their own electricity needs.
During the first nine months of the year, the solar panels generated 14.6 million kWh of electricity. This saved 3.7 million cubic metres of natural gas, which can instead be directed towards meeting the needs of households and the economy rather than being used for power generation.
These savings are particularly important ahead of the autumn-winter season.
The sector is also implementing measures to reduce electricity consumption. A total of 1,520 standalone solar-powered lights have been installed to illuminate facility grounds, along with 1,783 motion sensors. In addition, 181 variable-frequency drives have been installed on electric motors.
According to the company, these measures generated additional electricity savings of 13.2 million kWh in January–September 2026, equivalent to 3.3 million cubic metres of natural gas.
Another initiative involves the use of solar water heaters. The company’s facilities operate 117 units, each with a capacity of 200 litres. Their use helps reduce consumption of conventional energy resources, while arranging for the equipment to be assembled at local enterprises supports domestic production.
The deployment of solar power plants, standalone lighting, automated control systems and water-heating equipment therefore forms part of a comprehensive approach to improving energy efficiency across the sector.
The economic benefits are accompanied by environmental gains. Preliminary estimates suggest that avoiding the combustion of 7 million cubic metres of natural gas prevents the emission of approximately 9,000–11,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Thermal Power Plants said it would continue expanding the use of renewable energy, introducing energy-saving technologies and reducing electricity consumption for power plants’ own needs.
The measures are aimed at improving the efficiency of fuel and energy resource use, reducing environmental pressure and strengthening the country’s energy resilience.
