Uzbekistan Senate Approves General Product Safety Law

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The Senate of Uzbekistan's Oliy Majlis approved the Law "On General Product Safety" at its 18th plenary session, aimed at reforming the technical regulation system, improving product safety and strengthening consumer protection. The Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan reported.

During the session, senators noted that the growth of e-commerce, expanding cross-border trade and a wider range of products require new approaches to ensuring product safety.

The law was developed taking into account the requirements of the World Trade Organization Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade and international practice.

Under the law, all products entering the domestic market must meet safety requirements. Manufacturers, importers and other economic operators will bear direct responsibility for ensuring compliance with established standards.

Economic operators will also be required to assess product risks, maintain technical documentation, identify products, record consumer complaints and remove dangerous products from the market.

The law also introduces a risk-based market surveillance mechanism and establishes a national information exchange system to facilitate the rapid identification of dangerous products and their removal from circulation.

According to the senators, adoption of the law will help protect people's lives and health, improve the competitiveness and export potential of domestic products, bring the technical regulation system into line with international standards and strengthen consumer confidence in the market.

The law was approved by the Senate following the discussion.
