Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The Senate of Uzbekistan’s Oliy Majlis approved at a plenary session a law introducing amendments and additions to the Law “On Veterinary Medicine” aimed at improving state veterinary oversight.

The amendments provide for the development of the veterinary and sanitary safety system and bring national legislation in this area into line with international standards, including World Trade Organization rules.

One of the areas of the amendments is the introduction of provisions on preventing animal diseases. Preventive measures will be given priority over treatment. Particular attention will be paid to ensuring the safety of products and raw materials of animal origin.

The law clarifies the main principles of state policy in veterinary medicine and provides for coordination of state, departmental, production and private veterinary activities.

A separate set of amendments concerns the analysis and management of risks related to the production, preparation, processing, storage, transportation and sale of goods subject to state veterinary control.

The document also establishes procedures for dividing territories and sub-territories (compartments) based on the spread of infectious animal diseases and determining the corresponding safety categories.

Veterinary and sanitary measures are to be applied based on risk analysis. Where necessary, laboratory tests will be conducted on goods subject to state veterinary control.

According to senators, the amendments are aimed at harmonising national legislation with international requirements, ensuring veterinary well-being in the country and improving the safety of goods subject to veterinary oversight.

Following consideration, the law was approved by the senators.
