Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) opened in Arusha, Tanzania, on 5 October, with a parliamentary delegation from Uzbekistan led by Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Tanzila Narbayeva taking part.

More than 2,000 speakers and members of parliament from more than 180 countries, as well as representatives of international organisations, are participating in the event organised by the National Assembly of Tanzania.

The main theme of the 153rd Assembly is “Improving effective governance and empowering societies through inclusiveness, trust and opportunities for all.”

During the Assembly and plenary sessions, participants are considering current issues of global and regional importance. The agenda includes inclusive social development, human rights, the use of artificial intelligence, climate change and food security.

Particular attention is being paid to protecting the rights of persons with disabilities and combating terrorism.

The election of the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union is also scheduled as part of the event.
