Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — An emergency outage of 1,600 MW of generation capacity occurred at a new thermal power plant owned by EDF in Syrdarya region, triggering emergency protection systems and temporarily disrupting electricity supplies in some parts of Uzbekistan, the Uzbek Ministry of Energy said.
According to the ministry, the outage occurred at 05:05 on 25 September. Commissioning and testing work is currently being carried out at the recently built plant.
The emergency loss of generation temporarily left some consumers without electricity. The disruptions mainly affected pumps used to supply water for agriculture, as well as residential consumers.
The Ministry of Energy said all consumers who had previously been disconnected from the power supply have already been reconnected. Reserve capacity from energy storage systems and power plants was used to restore electricity supplies, after which consumers were gradually returned to normal power service.
According to Kazakhstan's KEGOC, a 1,516 MW generation outage occurred in Uzbekistan's power system at 05:02. This caused a power flow from the Central Asian power system and led to the separation of transit along the North-South direction.
In Kazakhstan's power system, the volume of consumer restrictions reached 962 MW. KEGOC said the emergency protection systems operated as designed.
At 05:43, about 40 minutes later, parallel operation of the Southern Zone of Kazakhstan's Unified Power System and the Central Asian Unified Power System with Kazakhstan's power system was restored. Following this, an order was issued to lift the restrictions on consumers.
KEGOC also confirmed the Uzbek side's information about the emergency loss of generation capacity at the new EDF thermal power plant in Syrdarya region. Uzbekistan's Ministry of Energy apologized to consumers for the inconvenience caused.
