Uzbekistan, Georgia Advance Environmental Cooperation
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan and Georgia have discussed practical steps to implement the memorandum of cooperation on environmental protection signed in July during the state visit of Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Georgia.
The discussions took place during a videoconference attended by a delegation from Uzbekistan's National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, led by Deputy Chairman Jusipbek Kazbekov, and a delegation from Georgia's Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, headed by First Deputy Minister Nino Tandilashvili.
The parties reviewed preparations for a joint roadmap to implement the memorandum and identified key areas of cooperation.
One of the main topics was cooperation in waste management, including the study of Georgia's experience in separate waste collection, sorting and recycling, as well as the construction of modern waste-processing facilities with energy generation.
The participants also discussed cooperation under the Paris Agreement on climate change. The talks covered projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, adapting to climate change and developing climate finance mechanisms.
In addition, the parties explored opportunities for joint work with international financial institutions and organisations, including the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the European Union, to prepare and implement environmental and climate projects.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to establish a joint working group, appoint national coordinators and hold regular expert consultations to coordinate implementation of the memorandum.
The participants reaffirmed their mutual interest in further expanding cooperation between Uzbekistan and Georgia in environmental protection and climate change.
