Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The third meeting of the Interparliamentary Commission on Cooperation between the Senate of Uzbekistan’s Oliy Majlis and the Council of the Republic of Belarus’ National Assembly was held in Khiva.
The participants discussed further development of the strategic partnership and expansion of practical cooperation between the two countries.
Particular attention was paid to the role of interparliamentary dialogue in implementing agreements reached at the highest level, as well as developing trade, economic and investment ties.
The Interparliamentary Commission began its work in 2025. At its first meeting in Vitebsk, the sides identified the main areas of cooperation.
The second meeting, held in January 2026, focused on implementing agreements reached at the highest level, as well as trade, economic and interregional cooperation.
At the Khiva meeting, the emphasis was placed on moving from agreements already reached to the implementation of specific projects and increasing the practical impact of interparliamentary cooperation.
During Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s official visit to Belarus on 8–9 July, the two countries signed a Declaration on Establishing Strategic Partnership Relations.
The sides also adopted an Action Plan for the Development of Trade, Economic and Social-Humanitarian Cooperation for 2026–2030.
Participants at the meeting emphasized the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in implementing the provisions of these documents.
The discussions included intensifying contacts between parliamentary committees and cooperation groups, exchanging legislative experience and improving the legal framework for bilateral relations.
A separate part of the talks focused on trade and economic cooperation.
As part of the goal of increasing bilateral trade turnover to US$2 billion, the sides highlighted the need to facilitate investment and industrial cooperation projects, as well as expand direct contacts between business representatives.
The participants also considered opportunities to increase the number of joint projects in agriculture, mechanical engineering, pharmaceuticals, electrical engineering and other priority sectors. Particular attention was paid to developing interregional cooperation.
The sides also exchanged views on further cooperation in tourism, education, healthcare and culture. They discussed increasing the number of joint business forums and launching new projects.
Following the meeting, the participants agreed to continue the regular work of the Interparliamentary Commission and use it as a mechanism for developing new practical projects within the framework of the Uzbekistan-Belarus strategic partnership.
