Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan's Transport Minister Ilkhom Makhkamov met with Nicholas Ho Lik-chi, Commissioner for Belt and Road of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, in Tashkent on 28 August 2026 to discuss expanding cooperation in transport and infrastructure, according to the Uzbek Transport Ministry.

During the talks, the parties reviewed the current state of interaction between Uzbekistan and China in transport, freight shipping, and the implementation of infrastructure projects. Special attention was paid to agreements reached during a visit by an Uzbek delegation led by the country's prime minister to Hong Kong in May 2026, with participants discussing next steps to advance those commitments.

A key topic of discussion was the involvement of Hong Kong banks in financing the construction of the Tashkent–Samarkand toll highway. Ho noted that this specific project is a priority for the Hong Kong side within the overall project portfolio.

The two sides also discussed prospects for signing an intergovernmental air services agreement between Uzbekistan and Hong Kong, focusing specifically on the potential establishment of direct regular flights.

Following the negotiations, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation and agreed to continue practical work on prospective transport and infrastructure projects.
