Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan and Eutelsat OneWeb have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at developing cooperation in satellite communications, digital infrastructure and advanced telecommunications technologies, the Ministry of Digital Technologies of Uzbekistan said.
The document was signed following a meeting between Minister of Digital Technologies Sherzod Shermatov and Eutelsat OneWeb executives on 24 September. The meeting was also attended by French Ambassador to Uzbekistan Walid Fouque and President of the Franco-Uzbek Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIFO) Alisher Khaitmetov.
The sides discussed the use of satellite technologies to expand telecommunications infrastructure and access to high-speed internet. In particular, GEO and OneWeb LEO solutions were considered for connecting remote communities, schools and medical facilities.
Particular attention was also paid to the use of satellite channels in the transport and aviation sectors, as well as the creation of additional and backup communication channels for national telecommunications networks, data centres and critical infrastructure facilities.
According to the Ministry of Digital Technologies, such solutions could strengthen the resilience of national communications systems and expand international backup connectivity. The sides also discussed the prospect of developing Uzbekistan as a regional telecommunications hub capable of providing satellite services not only domestically but also to countries across the region.
Eutelsat OneWeb is already cooperating with Uzbekistan through local partner UZSAT. The company expressed readiness to introduce its services in the country and expects them to be activated in the near future.
The Eutelsat OneWeb delegation included Hani El Ardja, Vice President of Sales for the MENA, Central Asia and China regions, and Ahmet Eren, Senior Sales Director.
The sides agreed to continue work on practical projects in satellite technologies, telecommunications and digital transformation.
