Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The decision to introduce new public transport fares in Tashkent was adopted by the Tashkent City Council of People’s Deputies, taking into account the results of a public survey and an economic analysis of the city’s public transport system.
The Ministry of Transport said that, under Article 12 of the Law “On Urban Passenger Transport,” setting maximum fares for urban passenger transport falls within the authority of local representative bodies of state power.
In Tashkent, these powers are vested in the Tashkent City Council of People’s Deputies.
As part of the draft decision on fares, the Ministry of Transport conducted a survey on its official social media pages and channels to gauge the views of residents and passengers in the capital.
According to the survey results, 36.5% of participants said they did not object to a fare increase provided that service intervals were reduced and the vehicle fleet was modernized with newer transport.
Another 31.8% fully supported the fare increase, citing time savings and service quality as important factors.
A further 18.2% considered the new fares partially acceptable but expressed concern about a possible increase in household expenses. Another 13.4% of participants considered the fare changes completely unacceptable.
Overall, 86.5% of survey participants expressed agreement with the fare increase either fully, partially or on condition that the quality of transport services is improved.
When considering the issue, deputies also examined economic factors affecting the financial sustainability of the system, the economic capacity of residents and changes in expenditure since 2023.
A 50% discount will remain in place for socially vulnerable passenger groups, including students, pensioners and people with disabilities. Passengers will also be able to reduce their expenses by purchasing long-term travel passes.
The Ministry of Transport said the decision is aimed at ensuring the financial stability of the capital’s public transport system, protecting its infrastructure and improving the quality of passenger services.
Following consideration of the issue, the Tashkent City Council of People’s Deputies unanimously approved the fare increase.
