Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Tashkent has launched a pilot dedicated lane for micromobility vehicles on a 2.4-kilometer section of Lutfi Street.
The pilot project is intended to serve as a model for developing similar infrastructure on other streets in the capital.
The dedicated lane is designed for bicycles, electric scooters, electric mopeds and other micromobility vehicles.
The project was implemented by the Tashkent City Traffic Management Center to separate vehicle and pedestrian flows.
The growing number of personal transport users and delivery services is increasing pressure on urban space. In the absence of dedicated infrastructure, micromobility users have to travel either alongside cars in the general traffic flow or on sidewalks together with pedestrians.
Differences in travel speeds under these conditions create inconvenience for all road users.
Following testing on Lutfi Street, the new format showed positive results. Specialists assessed its convenience and clarity for users, as well as the potential for organizing dedicated micromobility infrastructure within urban traffic conditions.
Future projects are expected to place greater emphasis on physically protecting such lanes. Depending on road conditions, they may be separated from vehicle traffic using delineators, barriers and other protective elements.
This is intended to reduce the risk of micromobility users’ routes crossing with those of vehicles.
Following the test, specialists at the Center are already examining other sections of Tashkent where a similar solution could be applied.
The development of such infrastructure is intended to separate traffic flows: cars should travel on the roadway, pedestrians should retain space on sidewalks, while bicycles and other micromobility vehicles should have a dedicated route.
