Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Preparations have begun at the construction site for a new international airport in Tashkent, which will initially be able to handle up to 20 million passengers a year. The project is part of Uzbekistan’s transport and logistics infrastructure development program through 2030.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev previously reviewed a presentation on the implementation of major projects in the transport and logistics sector.
The authorities note the need for consistent development of transport infrastructure amid economic growth, rising industrial production and expanding foreign trade. One of the priorities is to transform Uzbekistan into a key land transport hub between the Pacific Ocean and Europe.
By 2030, the transport market is planned to double in size, attract US$9.1 billion in investment and increase exports of logistics services to US$5.7 billion.
As part of the development of aviation infrastructure, new airport complexes are being built in Tashkent and Bukhara at a combined cost of about US$3 billion.
Agreements on a public-private partnership have already been signed for the new international airport project in Tashkent. Preparations for the construction site and the relocation of utility networks are currently underway.
In Bukhara, airfield infrastructure for a new airport is being developed. At the same time, an international tender is being held to attract a private partner for the construction and operation of the passenger terminal.
The modernization of the airports in Urgench and Namangan is also being considered under public-private partnership arrangements. In Andijan, the authorities plan to attract a private operator.
The implementation of these projects is expected to increase airport capacity and expand opportunities for serving passengers in line with international standards.
Particular attention was also paid to road development. Construction of the US$2.2 billion Tashkent-Samarkand toll road began in July. In August, the country’s first toll road, Urgench-Khiva, was commissioned.
The participants also discussed financing further work on the Tashkent-Samarkand highway and identifying investors for the construction of the Tashkent-Bostanlyk and Tashkent-Andijan toll roads.
