Norway Thrash Iraq 4–1 in World Cup Opener

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Norway made a strong start to their FIFA World Cup campaign with a 4–1 victory over Iraq in their opening Group I match. The game was played in Foxborough, Massachusetts, United States.

Erling Haaland was the standout performer, scoring twice in the 29th and 43rd minutes. Norway’s other goals came from Leo Ostigard in the 76th minute and Kristian Thorstvedt in stoppage time. Iraq’s only goal was scored by Ayman Hussein in the 39th minute.

The match marked Iraq’s first appearance at a FIFA World Cup since 1986. Norway returned to the tournament for the first time since 1998. Norway’s best World Cup result remains reaching the Round of 16 in 1938 and 1998.

After the first round of matches in Group I, Norway and France both have three points. Earlier, France defeated Senegal 3–1.

In the second round of fixtures, Norway will face Senegal, while Iraq will take on France. The matches will be played during the night of 23 June Moscow time.

The FIFA World Cup is being held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico and will conclude on 19 July. For the first time in the tournament’s history, 48 teams are participating, divided into 12 groups. The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to the knockout stage.
