Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has proposed preparing a Joint Concept for the Low-Carbon Energy Potential of Central Asia and launching the International Consortium “Clean Air of Central Asia” with a pilot environmental modernization programme.

The initiatives were put forward by the head of state at the Consultative Meeting of the Heads of State of Central Asia in Avaza.

According to Mirziyoyev, the joint concept would make it possible to more effectively coordinate the construction of new generating capacity, the development of modern energy storage systems and the creation of new energy corridors.

The president noted that the countries of the region have various energy resources, including significant hydrocarbon reserves as well as hydropower, solar and wind generation potential. In his view, this creates opportunities for the energy systems to complement one another.

Mirziyoyev called for a comprehensive approach to the development of Central Asia's energy sector and the rational use of available resources. At the same time, he stressed that green energy will play an increasingly important role in the region's energy mix.

The head of state separately addressed air pollution, which he said is becoming one of the most prominent environmental problems facing cities in Central Asia.

Uzbekistan previously proposed establishing the International Consortium “Clean Air of Central Asia”. Mirziyoyev proposed launching its activities with a specific joint project — a pilot Programme for the Environmental Modernization of Industrial Zones, Agricultural Clusters and Transport Hubs in the countries of the region.

According to the president, this approach would make it possible to move from discussing environmental problems to practical measures in areas with a high environmental burden.

The energy and environmental initiatives were part of a broader package of proposals put forward by Uzbekistan at the Consultative Meeting. They also included proposals to develop transport, use water resources rationally, and cooperate in critical minerals and digital technologies.

The Consultative Meeting in Avaza was held for the first time with the participation of Azerbaijan.
