Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has sent condolences to President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and the people of Kazakhstan following the deaths of military personnel during exercises in the Caspian Sea area.
The Uzbek president expressed support for the families and relatives of those killed and conveyed his sympathy over the tragic incident.
The incident occurred on 24 September in the Mangystau region during exercises conducted by the Naval Forces of Kazakhstan. According to the Kazakh side, 17 servicemen were swept into the waters of the Caspian Sea. Earlier reports said 19 military personnel were missing.
Fourteen people died as a result of the incident, while three servicemen were rescued.
Kazakhstan's Ministry of Defence said the tragedy occurred amid a sharp deterioration in weather conditions and stronger winds.
Kazakhstan declared a nationwide day of mourning on 25 September following the deaths of the servicemen.
