Investigator and Lawyer Detained in Namangan Region Bribery Case

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Officers of the State Security Service of Uzbekistan conducted an operational measure in the Chust district of Namangan region, resulting in the detention of an investigator and a lawyer on suspicion of a corruption-related crime.

According to investigators, the investigator of the Investigation Department of the Namangan Regional Internal Affairs Directorate was handling a criminal case against a 20-year-old resident of Chust district. It was established that the investigator demanded $40,000 for the termination of criminal prosecution, using a lawyer not connected to the case as an intermediary.

The lawyer was detained in the act of receiving the required amount from the suspect’s father. Law enforcement officers subsequently detained the investigator at the moment he was receiving $30,000 from the intermediary.

A criminal case has been opened against the investigator under Article 210 of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan (receiving a bribe), while the lawyer is charged under Article 212 (mediation in bribery).

Both suspects have been placed in custody as a preventive measure.
