Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The privatization of UzAuto Motors will be conducted openly and on a competitive basis. No preferential treatment or priority right to acquire the asset will be granted to individual companies, including US-based General Motors, the State Assets Management Agency (SAMA) told Spot.
The agency said any investor meeting the requirements of national legislation will be eligible to participate in the privatization. The asset is planned to be sold through an international tender, with the process conducted openly and transparently.
Preparations for the sale of UzAuto Motors have already begun as part of the previously approved privatization program. SAMA has engaged international advisers to conduct due diligence and collect and prepare the documents and materials required for the sale.
After receiving the relevant conclusions and proposals from the advisers, the agency will officially announce the start of the asset sale process.
Last week, SAMA Deputy Director Alisher Miraliyev told Spot that international adviser Alvarez & Marsal is conducting due diligence of UzAuto Motors and UzAuto Motors Powertrain. The planned sale covers a 99.7% stake in UzAuto Motors and 100% of UzAuto Motors Powertrain.
“We are interested in accelerating this process,” the SAMA deputy head said.
According to him, the agency plans to hold an international tender and is interested in attracting major players in the automotive industry. The final privatization strategy for the two companies, including whether they could be sold as a single lot, will be determined based on the adviser’s proposal.
According to Avtostrada, the alliance agreement between Uzavtosanoat and General Motors was signed in October 2017 for a period of 10 years. Under the agreement, UzAuto Motors received a license to produce GM models, the right to use the Chevrolet brand, access to the company’s technologies and the ability to export vehicles to CIS countries.
The agreement expires in 2027.
In November 2025, Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev received Shilpan Amin, global executive director of General Motors International, in Washington. The sides discussed the development of manufacturing cooperation, expansion of the product range and deeper localization.
The meeting also addressed prospects for joint projects in new technologies and raw materials needed in modern machine-building.
According to the US State Department, Uzbekistan intends to import US$5 billion worth of automotive parts over the next three years. Uzbekistan and the United States will also explore opportunities to expand their partnership as part of the upcoming sale and privatization of UzAuto Motors.
