Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The 47th World Chess Olympiad will be held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in 2028.
The Olympiad flag was officially handed over to the organizers of the next tournament during the closing ceremony of the 46th World Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, FIDE reported.
The flag was handed over on behalf of Uzbekistan by Alisher Sadullaev, First Vice President of the Uzbekistan Chess Federation.
It was received by Hussein Abdullah Al-Khouri, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Chess Club and Tournament Director of the 47th Chess Olympiad, and Abdulrahim Al-Zarouni, Director of the Corporate Communications Office of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, who heads the accommodation and travel committee for the Olympiad in the UAE.
During the handover, large screens showed views of Abu Dhabi, introducing ceremony guests to the city that will host the next Olympiad.
Concluding the ceremony, FIDE President Timur Turlov thanked Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev for his significant support for chess and the Olympiad.
He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov, governments, chess federations and organizing committees whose work contributed to the staging of the tournament.
Turlov then officially declared the 46th Chess Olympiad closed. The evening concluded with a fireworks display and a drone light show over Samarkand.
The ceremony was held at the Eternal City amphitheatre in Samarkand and brought together more than 2,000 guests. The Olympiad’s main awards were presented during the event.
In the open section, Uzbekistan won the tournament, receiving the gold medals and the Hamilton-Russell Cup.
India took silver, while Germany won bronze.
In the women’s section, China finished first and received the Vera Menchik Cup, followed by Kazakhstan in second and India in third. India also won the Gaprindashvili Cup for the best combined result in the open and women’s sections.
Among the individual awards, Uzbek grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov received the gold medal for the first board in the open section.
