Uzbekistan to Become Full IEC Member from 2027

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan will become a full member of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) from 1 January 2027, allowing the country not only to apply international standards but also to participate in their development and improvement through the organization’s technical committees, the Ministry of Digital Technologies said.

The announcement was made during a meeting between Minister of Digital Technologies Sherzod Shermatov and IEC Secretary-General and CEO Philippe Metzger.

Before the meeting, the IEC delegation was briefed on IT Park’s activities and efforts to develop Uzbekistan’s IT sector.

The representatives also visited UZINFOCOM and UzSoc and reviewed projects in digital infrastructure, information security and advanced technologies.

During the talks, the sides discussed expanding cooperation, implementing international standards, training national specialists and involving Uzbek experts in the development of international standards.

Philippe Metzger noted that Uzbekistan began cooperating with the IEC in 2015 under the Partnership Programme. In 2023, the country obtained associate member status and subsequently moved to full membership within a relatively short period.

Following its accession, Uzbekistan will become the only Central Asian country with full membership in the IEC.

The IEC has developed more than 11,000 international standards, around 2,000 of which have already been adopted in Uzbekistan. The sides noted potential for further cooperation in information technology, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, electrical engineering, energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Particular attention was paid to training national experts and expanding their participation in IEC technical committees.

The sides also agreed to develop international conformity assessment systems.

Following the meeting, the participants emphasized the importance of international standards in increasing the competitiveness of products manufactured in Uzbekistan and expanding their access to foreign markets.
