Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Customs officers in the Surkhandarya region have foiled an attempt to smuggle more than 52 kg of narcotic drugs from Afghanistan, the press service of the Customs Committee said.
At around 10:30 p.m. on 1 October, an empty cargo truck from Afghanistan arrived at the Ayritom border customs post. During customs inspection, a service dog reacted to the vehicle.
The truck, driven by a 34-year-old resident of Termez district, was subsequently subjected to a thorough inspection. Customs officers found 98 packages containing prohibited substances hidden in a concealed compartment in the trailer.
According to the Customs Committee, the packages had been wrapped in four layers of polyethylene, foil and tape to make the cargo more difficult to detect using large-scale inspection and X-ray equipment.
An examination showed that 79 packages contained hashish and another 19 contained opium. A total of 42 kg 335 grams of hashish and 10 kg 260 grams of opium were seized.
The total weight of the narcotics found was 52 kg 595 grams.
