Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan is planning to launch its own ferry operations on the Caspian Sea to accelerate foreign trade cargo shipments. This was announced by Minister of Transport Ilkhom Makhkamov in an interview with the “Uzbekistan 24” TV channel.
"One of the key routes supporting Uzbekistan’s export-import logistics today is the Middle Corridor, which runs through the territory of Azerbaijan," the minister noted.
He emphasized that, as a result of recent agreements, the preferential terms for container rail transportation through Azerbaijan have been extended until the end of 2026: “Thanks to the visit of our respected President, we have secured the continuation of these preferences — discounts of up to 70% will remain in place through 2026.”
The minister also stated that Uzbekistan is actively preparing to enter the Caspian Sea with its own ferries, which is expected to significantly reduce delivery times. Currently, the wait for ferry availability can stretch to 30–40 days, causing delays in logistics chains. In this context, Uzbek and Turkish companies are jointly working to establish ferry services operated by Uzbek shipping companies.
Additionally, Ilkhom Makhkamov reiterated the strategic importance of the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway project, which he said will create an additional transit flow between Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. “We have already reached agreements on expanding and upgrading the relevant infrastructure and are fully prepared for its implementation,” the transport minister stated.
