Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan are building the international Maamay border checkpoint and the Kerben-Maamay road on their shared border. The new route is expected to facilitate travel between the countries’ border regions, support trade and increase tourist flows, Kabar reported.

Bakyyt Torobayev, special representative of the Kyrgyz president, said the project would strengthen ties between the border territories of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan and create additional conditions for the development of trade and tourism.

The new checkpoint will include a veterinary control zone. Once it becomes operational, livestock farmers in Kyrgyzstan’s Aksy district will be able to conduct import and export operations officially.

The construction of the Kerben-Maamay road is also expected to make it easier for tourists from Uzbekistan to reach natural attractions in the Jalal-Abad region. These include the Padysha-Ata and Sary-Chelek nature reserves and Kara-Kamysh Lake.

Kyrgyz authorities expect an increase in tourist flows to support the development of the region’s hotel, catering, transport and trade sectors.

Earlier, three border checkpoints between Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan — Kadamjai, Chechme and Ak-Kyya — were switched to round-the-clock operations.
