Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedov signed an Agreement establishing a Supreme Council of Strategic Partnership between the two countries. The document is intended to strengthen political dialogue and expand practical cooperation in priority areas.
The agreement was signed following a meeting between the two presidents held on 8 October.
At the beginning of the meeting, Mirziyoyev congratulated Berdimuhamedov on the 35th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s independence, as well as on the country’s chairmanship of the Consultative Meeting of the Heads of State of Central Asia and Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth of Independent States.
The talks focused primarily on further deepening Uzbek-Turkmen strategic partnership relations.
The sides noted positive dynamics in trade and economic cooperation. Since the beginning of the year, bilateral trade has continued to grow steadily. The Shavat–Dashoguz cross-border trade zone is also operating successfully.
The sides separately emphasized the need to adopt an Action Plan aimed at significantly increasing mutual trade. They also plan to implement a Cooperation Programme covering industry, energy, transport, agriculture and water management.
Particular attention is expected to be paid to developing cooperation between the regions of the two countries.
Following the meeting, the signed Agreement establishing the Supreme Council of Strategic Partnership is expected to provide an institutional framework for further developing political dialogue between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan and expanding practical cooperation in key areas.
