Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The Fifth Samarkand Human Rights Forum held a commemorative session marking the 30th anniversary of the National Centre of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights. The session focused on the role of national implementation mechanisms in translating international human rights obligations into effective practice.
The session was held under the theme “From International Obligations to Effective Implementation: The Role of National Implementation Mechanisms in the Field of Human Rights.”
Speakers included Uzbekistan’s Supreme Court Chairperson Robakhon Makhmudova, Gulrukh Agzamova, chairperson of a relevant committee of the Legislative Chamber, representatives of national human rights institutions from Türkiye, Thailand, Qatar, Morocco, Kazakhstan, Russia and China, as well as experts from the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Commission of Jurists and UN structures.
The discussions focused on interagency coordination, international best practices and practical mechanisms for monitoring the implementation of human rights obligations.
Particular attention was paid to the contribution of Uzbekistan’s National Centre for Human Rights over the past 30 years to promoting international standards, cooperation with the UN system, and the development of human rights education and research.
The forum also hosted an award ceremony for winners of the Capstone Project Uzbekistan educational programme.
The awards were presented by Akmal Saidov, Director of the National Centre for Human Rights, Martin van Buuren, Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Uzbekistan, and Azamat Shambilov, President of the Center for International Development and Justice.
